Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the questions that families routinely ask and that might be on your mind.

What is the learning experience like?

I create an online experience that mimics the learning that takes place in the nation’s very best classrooms. My classes place a strong emphasis on student practice and employ video conferencing and shared writing spaces to allow students to collaborate in the most positive and meaningful ways.

What tools and programs are used?

I use Zoom for our videoconferencing and Classkick for our shared student writing spaces. In addition, I use several Google tools to conduct our classes and Talking Points to communicate with our families.

What technology is required and recommended?

Students are required to have a computer with a working camera and microphone. This allows them to conference live with their instructor and classmates. It is recommended (though not required) for students to use a tablet while collaborating with their classmates on their shared writing spaces. It is also recommended that students use a Chrome browser.

What is collaborative learning?

Collaborative learning refers to a set of teaching techniques where students work in small groups to achieve very intentional learning goals. Collaborative learning (as used in my classes) relies on positive interdependence, individual accountability, equal levels of participation, and simultaneous interaction.

What if we are travelling or my student needs to miss a class?

The beauty of online learning is that students can learn from anywhere! In the past, students have accessed my classes while their families are travelling. However, in the event that a class needs to be missed, a recording (and all of the day’s materials) will be provided to the student.
